Teaching and Technology Philosophy

An Educator

As an educator, I will facilitate an optimal and effective learning environment for all students. Within this safe haven, I will strive to create equilibrium between the haves and have-nots. Knowledge the learners obtain will not only correlate to textbooks, but also pertain to daily life experiences. Enhancing students’ individual skills displays my commitment to providing high quality educational experiences as I prepare students for the responsibilities of the future. I will increase opportunities for interdisciplinary encounters, including the arts, career exploration, and studies of other cultures. My project-based instruction will utilize technology and innovative instructional training.
When providing this optimal and effective learning environment, I am focusing on the well-being of all students. Each will be granted an opportunity to seek individual assistance beyond the whole group experience. The way that I anticipate accomplishing this goal is by making certain to offer supplemental materials for pupils on an individual basis when necessary. They will be granted an equal chance to excel in all areas, not just the subject matter at hand, but across the academic board. The extra materials provided to students within the classroom will aid in minimizing the margin between those who have access to outside resources and those who do not. Supplemental materials are essential on numerous occasions such as the following: for ESOL/ELL students, pupils with disabilities, or merely when the individuals are struggling with a particular subject matter. Worksheets with added questions or information will reinforce the repetition method. Students may need additional practice to improve their skills. Extra time devotion to individual students can take place before, during, or after class. Possibly communicating via email or blogging sites may help the students to improve as well. Another means of supplemental material is through tutoring. The pupil may feel uncomfortable asking particular questions in the whole class setting and it will be easier for them to speak to a person on-one-on. Also, having a private session may aid in narrowing down the area a student is struggling with in particular. The materials can be used to either reinforce the information or provide a different approach to the same items. When providing these additional items, I am able to further assist them as unique bodies without excluding them from the whole group lesson plan.
Learning is the process of obtaining knowledge by instruction, but is not limited to that medium. It can occur in other forms such as peer observation or through skill. Pupils in my classroom will explore all mediums in which learning may occur. I intend on varying my instruction to touch on the numerous ways in which students can obtain knowledge. They will discuss societal issues, explore multicultural ideas, in addition to other worldly experiences. Specific lessons that include these themes will be executed through written responses to prompts and free writing activities, current event analysis, student and teacher hosted discussions, and possibly field trips. Field trip explorations for multicultural and worldly ideals include the Holocaust Museum, national memorials and moments. The list of possibilities is never-ending. Having a wide-spread curriculum will also permit students to travel beyond the four structural walls of the classroom and place themselves into legitimate future endeavourers. Each pupil will have an opportunity to dabble in an area of choice, expanding to corresponding forms of artistic expression, technological advances and beyond. By incorporating project-based learning, students of all learning styles are able to excel. Those who are more familiar with verbal instruction will hear examples, visual learners are able to see an illustration of the concepts, and kinesthetic learners will be provided with tangible materials.
A large portion of my course will revolve around grammar and writing. Students will be introduced to the brilliant works of authors from the beginning of time up to modern artists. The age range and genre will vary greatly. All students will be encouraged to constantly read both in and out of class. This will help them dabble in different styles of writing that they may adapt and call their own. They will also be able to express which styles are not particularly of their liking. I will balance reading assignments between student picked books and assigned items of my own choosing. Mostly in my class I will encourage students to simply write. I want them to understand that writing is not just for a teacher’s eyes or formal occasions. Writing includes to do lists, letters, examination responses, and poetry. Continuous writing is the on hands approach to teaching the subject matter. Through students’ work I will be able to teach grammar. They will dive into their own writing as well as peers to catch grammatical errors. Using magazine and newspaper articles are a great medium as well for teaching grammar and structure. My ultimate goal is to aid my students in accomplishing the most practical and efficient way of communicating their thoughts both orally and in a written format.
While striving to achieve my goal, I plan to incorporate technology into every aspect of the classroom. For example, prior to reading a novel students will be required to research background knowledge on the setting. When doing so they will be extended the option of using a computer for Internet search engines. For all projects and activities students will be granted a choice to create a Wiki or Powerpoint presentation. By allowing the freedom to choose a medium of their liking, the students are able to fully express their creativity. I plan on using a vast array of technological mediums in order to expand the students’ minds on a daily basis. For instance, presentations of new materials will not only be oral, but also in a Powerpoint presentation. Another example is by calculating grades on a computer program that allows students to track their scores aside from the traditional method.
